If you love tequila, colourful decor, vibrant energy, good service , a wide selection of drinks and of course Mexican food then pop in to the latest addition of the Perron family in Melville
I have eaten at their Illovo branch that opened in May 2014 where we sat outside because the store is rather small so I recommend making a booking here. It gets hot outside so first choice is inside where you can also appreciate all the bright pinks and greens on the walls.
Going to the Melville one that opened in September on 4th Avenue was so refreshing, its bigger and better in my opinion. The location is great, i like corner shops they stand out so much more. They have taken over the old video shop which sadly seems to be a dying trade. The menu is the same as their Illovo and Bryanston store with authentic Mexican food. I searched for my favourite, nachos and was nearly disappointed when the friendly waitress pointed it out on their menu they call it Jenny Chow because they don’t melt the cheese. Well I tried it and WOW it was delicious. The home baked tortilla chips are heaven and the combination of the typical seven layer dip of refined beans, guacamole, cream, olives, lettuce, cheese and chopped tomatoes is enough for two people.
My son had the sizzling steak, it was tender and juicy. He was so impressed. The 250g aged fillet steak with Mexican potatoes, black bean and corn salsa, cream and guacamole with smoked chilli & lime butter was well worth the R 159.00
The beautiful mural of flowers inside and outside was done by Justin Badenhorst, first time he has done flowers. I can image there will be many shots of these flowers on social media in time to come. We were lucky enough to be a part of the Day of The Dead celebrations so there was a face painter who seemed to be excellent at her job. The men had the scary black and white images and the women a bit more feminine. One of the clientele arrived prepared for the event in her red head gear that she had made herself from flowers she bought and her friend painted her face.
The pinnate was was swaying gentle in the breeze, i am not sure if it was the relaxing music or the general happy vibe in the store that made one feel sorry for the colourful creature, because after all who wants to take a stick and beat him just for a couple of sweets.
The wifi didn’t work but who needs wifi when the atmosphere is so good and there is so much for the eye to see.
Happy colours makes happy people.
Will I be back ? for sure
