Strolling through the Mall of Africa this couldn’t be a better place to find a global fashion powerhouse Laduma Ngxokolo’s store Maxhosa..
Originally from PE he now stays in Gauteng. Having graced the cover of Elle magazine with his items he is turning heads.
This stylish store sells Xhosa- inspired knit wear using traditional Xhosa beadwork patterns , symbolism and colours as inspiration for the scarfs, capes , dresses and other items of this haute couture range.
Laduma Ngxokolo established the business in 2010, when he wanted to create items suitable for Amakrwala ( Xhosa initiates ) who go up to the mountains normally in the winter for month . The most common area being the Eastern Cape area of South Africa. On their return the young men normally aged around 16 years must be wearing new clothes , these are normally gifted and families were buying European brands.
Laduma saw an opportunity in the market to create clothing that was African for Africans. The young mens colours are normally earthy and the women wear brighter patterned clothes and almost all patterns have a touch of blue in them. The clothing is made of a combination of wool and mohair giving the clothing the softest feel , with sizes ranging from XS up to XL , they cater for everyone.
This is a very important ceremony in the Xhosa culture with families buying new homes, cars, beds and anything that they can afford, as the belief is these young men are now starting a new life. So it is only fitting they they take this important step over into manhood wearing this elegant audacious brand.
Pop into this store and let the friendly Xhosa staff Ntombi and Nosiphiwo share more of their cultural stories with you.
